Eireni, an introverted pastor’s daughter from the provinces, meets Anna, who is building a sauna out of wooden Euro pallets on the roof of an occupied building. Their first encounter takes place in the street, after Eireni has stepped in a pool of blood. It is summer, and the two fall in love. At the same time, people are being shot or disappearing without a trace in their city. A Senegalese tailor, a Turkish-born shopkeeper and his son. Every day, the danger seems to grow, yet the police do nothing to stop these racially motivated crimes. They simply hose away the blood and blame the mafia. Anna and Eireni want to do something about this inaction and devise a plan to investigate for themselves at the summer camp of a far-right nationalist movement. As they do so, they try not to betray either themselves or their feelings for each other. But the pressure mounts, and the deeper they venture into the inner circle of the movement, the more real the danger becomes. What does it really take to stand up to fascism?

In this award-winning play, which received the Nestroy Prize, Eve Leigh combines political resistance with a queer coming-of-age love story.

The German premiere of this acclaimed play is being shared by Theater Konstanz and Theaterhaus G7 in Mannheim. “Verbranntes Land” premieres at both theatres on 26 September 2026.
