Rebekka Bangerter was born in Bern (CH) in 1991 and works as a theatre maker and director in both municipal theatres and the independent scene. Her work has been presented at venues such as the Gessnerallee in Zurich, the Theater Darmstadt, and internationally in Antwerp and Utrecht, as well as digitally in Kyiv and Tehran.
With her Romansh-language work "Bab, siu Archiv ed Jeu," she was invited to the Swiss Theatre Meeting 2026. In 2024, she and Chun Shing Au received the Zurich Theatre Spectacle's Recognition Award for "GPO BOX No 211." Rebekka Bangerter graduated from DAS Theatre in Amsterdam and, several years prior, studied theatre directing at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), where her graduation production, "Woyzeck," was invited to the Körber Festival for Young Directors at the Thalia Theatre in Hamburg. Further studies took her to object theatre/new media and performance at the National Academy of Arts (UNA) in Buenos Aires, as well as to German philology, linguistics, and history in Basel.
In addition to her work as a freelance director, she is also active as a performer, dramaturge and in teaching at the Zurich University of the Arts.
Her work focuses particularly on the performativity of language and how mediatization influences our perception and reality. It is characterized by an aesthetic of absence, an attempt to create a counterpoint to a society of spectacle and constant excess. This often results in participatory, installation-based theatrical events in which space, text, sound, performance, form, and content mutually condition and intertwine, activating the audience in unconventional ways. Inspired by the concept of Realismo Magico, she frequently interweaves different levels of reality, such as mythology, science, history, and personal experience.
